| How To Join United Poets Laureate International and attend a World Congress of Poets Membership in UPLI is by application and referal. Board members and regular members may refer new members.
If you heard about us on the web, please fill out the Membership Form found by clicking on How To Join, moving over to the tab Membership Form. Fill it out then send it by regular mail with samples of your poetry, a recognizable photograph of yourself--preferably a portrait, a brief bio, a list of credits, and your annual dues of $25. The board will review your application, someone will probably contact you to get to know you better, and then probably approve your membership. We rarely refuse a member application. If we refuse your application, your packet, including the $25 will be returned. We do not accept poetry or poets that advocate hatred, violence, dissention, or general negativity. We do accept poets who write to better our world for everyone. The last line of the application form asks who refered you. Put down that you heard about us from the website. When the board reviews your application, the referal will be made by the board.
If you are a World Congress Participant or a past or current member who wants to pay annual dues, please click on How To Join, then Membership Form for the application blank. We require your application form, membership annual dues of $25 US Dollars per person for one year or $500 per person for Life Membership. New photos are always welcome.
We ask for a recognizable photo to be used with your poetry and to assist in recognizing you in airports when you join us for a Congress, and to publish with your poetry in our Laurel Leaves Magazine and on this website.
We ask for your credits so we can help publicize your accomplishments in promoting world brotherhood and peace.
We also require members to give us a sample of their poetry. Although we rarely turn down a membership application, we do reserve the right to do so. Poetry must be suitable to all ages, ethnicities, religions, preferences, etc. We do not accept derogatory works or poets who are known for their derogatory works. We are actively promoting brotherhood, and peace through poetry. As our president, Ben Yuzon, says, “Brothers don’t always get along, but they still love each other.” The poetry we accept may be beautiful or controversial. However, if controversial, it must not degrade or ridicule the subject of controversy. We, as an organization, are looking for, and would like to be, examples of how to deal with controversy, adversity and terrible situations with respect and dignity. If poets can not devise a vocabulary and phraseology to improve the world, who can? It is for poets to lead the way, open doors and windows and help lead our troubled world out if its downward spiral of violence and disrespectfulness into that which we want it to become.
By submitting poetry, the author grants UPLI publication rights to the submitted poetry. UPLI’s official hard-copy publication is Laurel Leaves which is published after each World Congress to commemorate and document our achievements and friendships; and sometimes before a Congress to give information and publicity. We also will publish your poetry on our website. For website publication, you may submit poems, a bio, photos or illustrations (jpeg or hard copy) your email if you would like to hear from other poets, your website (it will not be linked if there is offensive material on it) and commercial information for your poetry or art such as price of books and how to obtain your poetry. Each member in good standing who submits will receive a page that they may add to, remove or change as they choose, within the guidelines of UPLI by sending material to Judy Cheung, jhcheung@comcast.net.
Please see the Poetry section for further information. We strongly prefer that poems not originally in English be submitten in their original language with an English translation or description.
Please send all information to Judy Cheung, UPLI Sec./Treas, 704 Brigham Ave., Santa Rosa, CA 95404, USA, or Pres. Benjamin R. Yuzon, 2226 Pheasant Dr., Hercules, CA 94547. For additional information, contact Judy Cheung at jhcheung@comcast.net.
