ODE TO A SHELL

By Dulcie Levene, LWL, England

I walked along the golden sand

And saw it shining on the beach,

A jewel of the sea...a shell

It’s ocean home far out of reach....

I held it in my hand and saw

A masterpiece of God’s design

‘more beautiful than any gem

A treasure of the sea was mine.

And then I thought that long ago

A tiny creature lived inside

Safe from the perils of the sea

A place where it could safely hide,

I ran down to the waters edge

And swam as far as I could go

Ant threw the little shell and hoped

it reached the ocean bed below.

And safe from hurricanes and storms

This little house with spiraled dome,

Would welcome in a tiny friend

Who gratefully will call it “Home.”

This poem won a prize in the 2007, 20th World Congress of Poets in
