Once Upon a Starry Night

(A Love Poem)

By Jose Roman Reyes Laquian

12:12 a.m., Sunday 15 June, 1975

Once upon a starry night,

I beheld thee beneath a tree:

Thee, below the heavenly light,

I saw thee crying helplessly.

Like a song, there I found thee

A broken-hearted melody,

A fallen leaf that once clung tight

To its branch on the tree.

Once upon a starry night,

Our love was born beneath a tree;

What God-sent joy, what sweet delight

To hope ‘twas for eternity!

Tender kisses, sweet caresses

And two lovers’ promises:

“To you alone will I be true,

Always, dearest, I love You.”

Once upon a starry night,

A gentle rain, like teardrops, fell:

Beneath a tree, the wondrous sight

Of love was bidding me farewell.

There I held thee in my arms,

Dying of a cruel disease:

What fate is this to end our love

We had hoped to be a lifetime bliss!

Now, the day’s hard toil has ended

And the sun had made its bed;

Lives upon earth must take their rest

And sleep in peace within their nests.

Tonight, the stars will shed their lights

Amidst the darkness of the night’

Alone, I’ll tread this lonely sore

And greet the starry night once more!

Misan a Benging Mabatwin

(Metung Poemang Lugud)

Nang Jose Roman Reyes Laquian

King misan a benging batwin matindag la,

Lalam na ning dutung, carin, ikit daca;

King sawup ding sinag ding sulu ning banwa

Ikit cung lungcut mu, maki lwa ca mata.

Calupa ning canta, ikit da ca, lrug

King penandit aytang kikyac ca lindayug;

Nung wari keng bulung cule mu tinabug

At caybat king gabun carin ca mebaldug

King misan a benging batwin matingag la

Lalam na ning dutung sinta mibayit ya,

Tula Nang pigcalub ning Guinu decata

Yang panisasan tang e ne mapupus pa.

Malambis lang uma minlungan king suyu

Caring mipalsintang biclud ning pangacu”

King capilan pa man, lrug, keca yam u

Ining pamalsintang dalise at tutu.”

At misan a benging batwin matindag la

Ing ambun balamu lwang ibat king banwa;

Lalam na ning dutung ing penandit ayta

Bina yang malungcut, cacu mamun na ca.

Carening tacde cu mayna meng catawan

Sinupil ning sakit at mipmung bengisan,

Mu anti cabayat pigunamgunaman

Suyuwan tang tapat tane miyangganan.

Ngening paynawa ne ing pepatingapun

Aldo lintang na ne dase nang milulun’

Maybe ning kakewan tano memanapun

Ban caring sale ra miglip nong maratun.

Ngening benging ini batwin matindag la

Managlus king dulum sinag a tagle ra;

Magdidi-dili cu keni king aplaya

Ing banwang mabatwin lalon keng misan pa.
